The team at KillMyJob.com has been entrepreneuring (is that a word?) for a long time now, and teaching other people about entrepreneuring for the last several years.

We get a kick out of helping other people start their own business, and we are constantly on the lookout for opportunities that will make it easier for people to achieve their dream of business ownership and financial independence.

That’s why we are super-excited to share our experiences with selling products on Amazon.

Amazon is On Fire!

You don’t need me to tell you that! I’m sure you already know as a customer of theirs that they continue to get better and better and grab more and more of your spending dollars.

And the amazing thing is that they have an ‘open channel’, meaning that YOU can sell your products on Amazon, tapping into their massive brand recognition, marketing power, and customer base!

This is probably the simplest business we’ve ever started, and if you follow the model outlined in this series of posts, the likelihood of success is very high.

Now, let me be clear with an earnings disclaimer: EVERY business requires hard work at some point or another. Your success in this model is NOT guaranteed, just like it’s not guaranteed with any business. The results we have experienced may not be typical, and certainly shouldn’t be expected for those unwilling to do the work!

That being said, some business models are just easier than others, and this one is great!

I’m so excited and confident in this model, that I’ve even been pushing my own mom to get involved so she can generate some extra retirement income!

Our goal is to help you get started generating an income on Amazon as quickly and easily as possible by providing you with the fundamentals. Yes, there are plenty of other strategies to learn if you want to maximize your opportunity with Amazon, but this is what you need to get started.

In our case, our very first attempt at this process resulted in us reaching about $5,000/month in income in just about 60 days.

Depending on your situation, $5,000 may not seem like much, or it may seem like a dream come true. Considering the average American family doesn’t make much more than that each month, I believe it’s a number that can be life-changing for most people.

The process we followed to get there can certainly be done more quickly than that (we’ve found that the biggest variable is the time it takes to get products from China), but it’s also realistic that it could take up to 90 days. Be patient and keep your goal in mind!

How did we do it?

Let me first tell you why you should consider selling products on Amazon, as it has many advantages over other businesses you may be evaluating.

8 Reasons Why You Should Start a Business Selling on Amazon

There are a lot of exciting business opportunities out there; it can be hard to determine which one is the best for you to pursue. So let me first tell you why you should consider selling products on Amazon, as it has many advantages over other businesses you may be evaluating:

Combine all eight of these benefits together, and you’ve got a business model that is very hard to beat! And the beauty is that this business can be done by anyone, no matter your age, race, location, accent, or education level. Anyone qualifies!

The Six Steps to Building Your Business on Amazon

There are six steps to start building your business and generating an income on Amazon. If you’ve never done it before, these steps may seem a little overwhelming to you at first. Don’t let that stop you! I promise you that it’s a heck of a lot easier than you think, and once you’ve gone through the process once you’ll realize it’s quite simple. Here are the six steps:

  • Find a product to sell
  • Find a product supplier
  • Get set up for business in Amazon
  • Create your product listing in Amazon
  • Setup Fulfillment by Amazon
  • Market your product

We’ll cover these six steps in pretty good detail – starting in this post and finishing in the remaining posts in this series – so you’ll have a good understanding of what’s required to be successful. Before we do that, I want to give credit where credit is due. We learned this business by studying the success of others, primarily the team at Amazing Selling Machine and Ezra Firestone. We’ve invested a lot of time, energy and money to learn from them, and we suggest that once you have your Amazon business up and running and generating some income, you do the same. Ok, let’s get started with…

STEP #1: FINDING A PRODUCT TO SELL

Most businesses require you to get innovative when creating a product or service to sell. That stumps most people, and puts the brakes on their dream of starting a business. That’s one of the things I love about the Amazon selling business…you don’t need to create anything unique or innovative at all. You simply need to find a product that is…

  • In a category you can compete in: Some categories of products are just easier to compete in than others. For example, you aren’t going to create the next iphone or Nintendo gaming console, so you clearly shouldn’t waste your time there. But measuring cups or doormats…you can compete there no problem!
  • In a category you enjoy and have knowledge of: It’s much easier to know if a product will sell if it’s in a category that you are interested in and have knowledge of already. Would you buy it? Would your friends? Is there something you can do to make the product just a little better based on your knowledge? Great, that’s all you need!
  • Over $10 in price point: We don’t want you trying to compete on very thin margins…that’s no fun. So find products that sell at a high enough price point and margins to be profitable for you.
  • Lightweight and easy to ship: Everything sold on Amazon gets shipped somewhere, so having products that are lightweight, small, and don’t break easily – so they are easy to ship – makes your business much easier.
  • Doesn’t have strong brand loyalty: You want to find products that people don’t have a strong brand attachment to already, as this will just make it harder to convince them to buy from you. Going back to our doormats example…you aren’t loyal to a particular brand of doormat, are you? I didn’t think so! And neither is anybody else, which makes it an ideal product category for you to compete in!
  • Is a proven seller: You don’t want to have to create demand for your product. Rather, you just want to harness the demand that already exists from Amazon’s shoppers. That’s how you make this business easy!

To show you how easy it is to search for products, I had Caroline from the KillMyJob team record a couple of quick videos where you can watch over her shoulder as she searches for products to sell.

After you’ve done your initial research, you’ll narrow down on 5-10 products that you think are viable opportunities. Watch the second video to see how we do this.

We find it’s very handy to track our research in the spreadsheet to help us stay organized and make objective decisions. You can get the spreadsheet Caroline was using right here…

As you can see, we don’t assume that the first product we pick is going to work out, so we get a handful of contenders and go into the next step in our process, which is examining our supplier options. -

STEP #2: FINDING A PRODUCT SUPPLIER

Once you’ve found a handful of products that you think could be winners, it’s time to find a supplier to work with. Finding a supplier is part art, part science. I’m not going to lie, it can be a frustrating process that seems to take longer than it should. But once you find a good supplier, they are like gold!

A good supplier can be your best asset in helping you quickly and easily bring new products to the market to sell, particularly if you are sourcing the products from China or other overseas markets.

An International Business…Overnight?!

It’s probably no surprise that many of the products you’ll be interested in selling can be sourced from China. This certainly isn’t the case for all products, and in many cases it makes more sense to source a product domestically. But for the sake of keeping this post from getting even larger than it already is, we’ll focus on China!

It may seem horribly intimidating to think that you’ll be importing products from all the way across the world if you’ve never done it before, but I promise that it’s not that difficult! The availability of information online combined with modern shipping services have made it unbelievably easy for you to start doing international imports/exports in no time! The goto resource to start investigating Chinese suppliers is Alibaba.com.

Alibaba is kind of like the Amazon.com of China, and you can literally find anything and everything for sale on this or one of their other sites. Finding products is as simple as doing a search. You’ll be shocked at what is available when you do this for the first time! Once again, Caroline from the KillMyJob team has put together a video showing you how to find product suppliers on Alibaba.com.

Once we’ve found a number of suppliers that seem to be good options, we use Alibaba’s built-in message center to contact them and start our negotiations (a little tip: you can always order less and pay less per unit than what is listed in Alibaba!).

Are You Excited Yet?!

I hope that you can start to see that this opportunity isn’t as difficult as it may have originally seemed! There are many resources in place to help you succeed with this business. Anybody can have an income-producing product up and selling in Amazon in as little as 30-90 days.

And we’re just getting started!
